The Day the World United - 24 October 2009 - International Day of Climate Action

Here are just two pics that we took at some of the '350' actions held in Cape Town. Have a look at our Facebook group to see more. For more awe-inspiring images/videos of worldwide actions, visit www.350.org.

  1. David Lipschitz: "A large group of people met at Table Mountain lower cable station at 8am on Saturday 24th October 2009. We were going to walk up the mountain, but it was decided by the organisers the day before to rather hike to Signal Hill as fewer park rangers would be required to support a hike on Signal Hill and ensure that no damage was done to the mountain.

We started walking at about 8.30 and reached Signal Hill at about 9.45. It was a beautiful day with a light fog and cloud over the mountain range and was the first time that I have hiked on the mountain in the fog. It was very refreshing and produced a lovely ambience on the hike. I spoke to the people around me and enjoyed learning about what they do. Once we got to Signal Hill we formed a massive 3 5 0 in the parking lot as a practice round for when a helicopter would photograph us later. The helicopter pilot was with us when we did this. We practiced shouting three-five-zero in each group which created a sense of camaraderie and got everyone chatting and excited about what we were doing. After forming these groups and remembering our positions for the later groups we broke into groups of about 10 people to discuss why we were on the hike and what contribution we were making to sustainability.

I was in a group which included people from Working On Fire and we discussed their responsibilities regarding fighting fires and their needs in the areas they live. I introduced them to the concepts of Renewable Energy including cooking and making electricity from the sun and they were intrigued.

At about 11.30 we walked onto the grass area of Signal Hill to again form our 3 5 0 and await a helicopter to take photos of us.

Most people hiked back to Table Mountain after this.

I'd like to thank Jessica Thorn from the Climate Action Partnership who organised this walk with support from Samantha Bailey, Africa Liaison for 350.org"
